Nearly a third of the food produced for consumption in Switzerland ends up being thrown away. This represents the equivalent of 330 kg of food waste per person per year.
These figures are so alarming that on 6 April of this year, the Federal Council approved an action plan against food waste, urging food-sector businesses, farmers, distributors, restaurants and consumers to generate less food waste.
Reducing food waste is part of our sustainable development goals. Our aim is to cut food waste by 5 % by 2025. Signing the Federal Council’s action plan was therefore a perfectly natural thing for Migros to do.
Preparing surprise baskets for Too Good To Go as well as our various partnerships with charitable organisations, like Caritas and Table Couvre-Toi, enable us to get ever closer to our goal and target a wide range of customers.
Beyond the fight against food waste
But that’s not all. We are continuing to notch up successes in this area, and our partnership with Too Good To Go has turned out to be much more than an aid to reaching our sustainable development goals.
Our surprise baskets make our customers happy: “They always leave with a smile on their face,” says one of our reception employees. What’s more, these baskets help people to discover new Migros Group products. Nevertheless, some customers are simply grateful for an opportunity to purchase products that they couldn’t otherwise afford at full price.
The impact of our partnership even goes as far as encouraging children to try out new flavours, as one mother reported when she came to collect a surprise basket at ELSA: “My four-year-old son only ever used to eat chocolate yoghurts. Now he tries absolutely all dairy products and has become a real fan! ” ».
We can share this success story with you today thanks to the teamwork of our staff at the central secretariat and at the kiosk, whom we would like to thank for their commitment. Without them, we would never have got a rating of 4.9 stars out of 5 on the Too Good To Go app. Further information is available in visual form in our latest video.
